Lesson 23
The Godhead - Part VIII
God the Son
by Ruth Mahoney Swaim
There are three that bear record in heaven: The Father; the Word (the Son); the Holy Spirit. These three are one. I John 5:7
That is tri-unity, one God, manifested and distinguished in three persons.
In discussing God the Son our first question is "Who is the Son?'
His Name
JESUS. His name is JESUS.
Luke 1:31, 21: And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest.
Matthew 16:15, 16: He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the SON of the living God.
Before coming to earth His name was 'the Word.' John 1:1, 2: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.
John 1:1 specifically states that Jesus, or the Word, was God. Even though in this particular lesson we are studying His Sonship, remember...He is God.
This short note on His name is barely skimming the surface of what He is called. To name just a few,
He is called:
Wonderful
Counselor
Prince of Peace
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
King of Kings
Lord of Lords
Isaiah 9:6; Revelation 17:14
A Glimpse of Him
So, we ask again. Who is the Son?
We know that He came forth from the Father and revealed the Father. John 16:28
John 17:6, 8, 26: I have manifested thy name to the men thou gavest me out of the world; for the words which thou gavest me I have given them; and I have declared unto them thy name and will declare it, that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them and I in them.
We know that he was not crated as we are. He was begotten...begotten of the Father. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
We know that He is eternal. That means He has always been and will always be. John 1:1-3
We know that all things were made by him and without him was not anything made that was made. John 1:3
We know that He is co-equal with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. Matthew 10:30
And we know that He is the second person in mode of operation in the Godhead. Not inferiority, not inequality, but submission and obedience in redemption's plan to the Father's will.
Following is a short list of who God the Son is:
He is the light which shines in the darkness. John 1:5, 9
He was made visible by the incarnation.
He was pre-existent. That means He existed before the world was.
He is pre-eminent above all things except the Father. Matthew 11:27, 28; Luke 20:41-44
He is to be worshipped as God. Matthew 2:11; 14:33; Luke 24:52; John 5:23; Acts 7:59-60
The Eternal Word. John 1:1-3
The Mediator or Umpire between the Father and man.
Our intercessor and Advocate.
Our Redeemer, Savior, Grace of God revealed.
Our sacrificial lamb.
Central person of the Godhead.
The visible revelation and expression of God in human form. Romans 1:19-20; Hebrews 1:3
He will always, eternally be the son. He will always, eternally be co-equal in power, nature, attributes and glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ embodies everything in the Old and New Testaments. He is the fulfillment of all and in all. You can find Him on very page of the Bible.
He is the fulfillment of our hope.
He paid every price to the last farthing for our eternal life and reconciliation to the Father.
Everything for which we petition the Father goes through Him. He is our advocate (lawyer), our defense.
He is the covering for our sin (his precious blood).
He is our Healer for by His stripes we were healed.
He is our peace, our breath and our rest.
What's He Like?
How does one try to describe Jesus? The subject is too vast and too wonderful. We just gaze on His beauty and tremble in awe. As the old hymn says "Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain, but Jesus paid it all."
He left His magnificent place with the Father, became a man, enduring the shame, degradation and filth of this world. On that awful day at Calvary, the culmination of His time here on earth, He undid what Adam set in motion when he fell.
Since it was a man who sinned and threw the world into chaos, a man had to undue that terrible act. That is why Jesus left His pristine and holy dwelling, came to earth as a man, paid the price as a man and bought back our standing with God.
Again I say...What a Savior!!
I guess my favorite concept of Jesus, at this point in my life, is as the obedient servant.
The scripture says in Philippians 2:7 that He took on himself the form of a servant. Everything He did was for the benefit of someone else. A servant serves others. He was always doing for others. He was totally obedient to the will of the Father and did nothing except what He saw the Father doing It was all for me...and I might add, for you.
I often think and muse on the stories concerning His activities hereon earth presented to us in the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
He arose early while the others were asleep and went into a private place, usually the hills, and prayed. He spent much time with the Father.
When everybody else was finally getting up He went about the business of teaching, healing and talking with any who came to Him.
Then when they were all tired and departing to their homes, He would go off alone and spend more time in prayer with the Father, seeking the Father's will and purpose - and all for us.
The scripture often speaks of Jesus being weary and tired. And yet He was always available. Sometimes He even had to get into a boat and teach from the waters edge to keep people from pressing in on Him.
He never disobeyed the voice or desires of His father and went to the cross in total obedience.
He understood weariness and burdens. Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
That's our Savior.
That is the Son of God.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus;
There's just something about that name.
That name that is above every name.
That name to which every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!
Prayer: Thank you Jesus for saving my soul. I was dead in trespasses and sin but you bought my salvation that I might have life. Thank you for coming to earth to obtain my redemption. I want to follow your example and be an obedient child of God. I receive you into my life and surrender my will to your will.
